May 9 - May 23 (Thursdays) - 10:00AM - Book Study - Spirituality in the Senior Years

"In the sixties, when we all ran hard, [Malcolm] Boyd taught us to run with Jesus. Now, he teaches us to walk, don't run, to the exit. He gives one hand to Jesus, then takes our hand as we stumble home." The Rt. Rev. Paul Moore, former Bishop of New York

PrayersForTheLaterYearsThe spiritual journey of our lives never ends. Each day we have the opportunity to draw ever closer and deeper into God's love. As I once wrote in the Newstimes, my real spiritual journey began as a teenager with the writings of Fr. Malcolm Boyd in his book Are You Running With Me Jesus. Having been ordained in 1954 (which just happens to be the year I was born), Fr. Boyd has been ordained for a very long time. In 2002 he wrote a wonderful little book (only 62 pages) called Prayers for the Later Years in which he says, "As I write these lines, my own life is slowing down considerably. Its pace has changed from high energy running to a more reflective and measured walking in my gradual approach to my eightieth birthday. Yet the dynamic of prayer in my life grows ever stronger."

Here at St. James', we have been having adult education on Wednesday evenings. That simply does not work for many of our people who do not drive at night. As a "trial balloon," we will be having a study using Malcolm Boyd's book. Again, it is very short and very easy to read but yet speaks eloquently to those in their senior years. The Study will take place in the St. James' library or the lounge, depending on the number of people attending. You will be asked to purchase the book ahead of time or to call the office and we will order them for you (Cost is $16.99). (NB: when purchasing the book be sure to get the one by Malcolm Boyd as there are two different books with almost the same name.) Again, the study will take place on three Thursdays in May – the 9th, 16th, and 23rd. We'll begin at 10 AM and end by about 11 AM. Feel free to invite your friends.

If we find that there is an interest in continuing this type of exploration of the spiritual life, in the fall we can continue, possibly with Margaret Guenther's Toward Holy Ground: Spiritual Direction for the Second Half of Life.
