Pastoral Care at Saint James'
Contact: Suzanne Carley
The lay Pastoral Care Ministry of St. James’ Parish is committed to serving God by living the Gospel. We seek to love our neighbors as ourselves. As skilled and faithful ministers, we share one another’s burdens by listening, caring, learning and praying. Our love for Jesus Christ enables us to grow our ministries.
Stephen Ministry- St. James’ is a Stephen Ministry Congregation. Grounded in Jesus’ command to love one another, Stephen Ministers offer lay pastoral care by providing in confidential, one-to-one relationships love and support to those going through a life crisis or challenge. As Christian friends, Stephen Ministers walk beside, listen and share God’s love. Stephen Ministry can help meet the needs of individuals who are hospitalized, terminally ill, bereaved, in a job crisis, disabled, homebound, lonely, or in a spiritual crisis.
Friendly Visitor- Some of our parishioners are not able to get out and about and cannot get to church. Pastoral Care has begun a Friendly Visitor ministry where members of the parish visit our shut-ins one on one to keep them connected and part of our parish family. If you would like to be a part of the ministry or would like more information, please contact the clergy
Healing- The Sacramental Rite of Healing is incorporated into our Sunday services each month. For the 8:00 a.m. service it is on the first Sunday of the month. It is on the third Sunday of the month at 10:00 a.m. Anointing with oil, followed by the laying on of hands takes place. Prayers may be asked for yourself, a loved one, and for any specific concern. Trained lay healing ministers act as vessels for the wondrous healing power of God. Please be assured that your prayers are held in confidence. For further information, please see the healing insert found in the bulletin on designated healing Sundays or you may speak with the clergy or the lay healing ministers.
Morning Prayer at Glen Hill - A group of St. James’ parishioners lead Morning Prayer services on Saturday mornings at the Glen Hill nursing home in Danbury. The rotation is about once every 10 weeks and the service lasts approximately 20 minutes.
Prayer Chain - The Prayer chain is a loosely collected group of parishioners who pray for the parish. If you would like to be member of the prayer chain or place a name on it, contact Kathy Sabbagh. You must have permission from the individual or group you would to place on the prayer chain.
Flower Delivery - Each Sunday, a member of our flower delivery team collects the prepared flower arrangements and delivers them to our parishioners in the hospital, nursing homes or at home.
EV (Eucharistic Visitor) - This ministry offers a time for communion, prayer and fellowship to our homebound, nursing home, or hospitalized parishioners who cannot attend church. Lay Eucharistic Ministers deliver communion to those in need.
Hospital Visits - Three times a week, one of our pastoral care lay ministers goes to Danbury Hospital to visit our hospitalized parishioners, extending to them the caring concern of the St. James’ community. Prayers are offered and devotional materials are given to them to read that will uplift their heart and sustain their spirit.
Senior Ministry - Pastoral Care hosts a senior luncheon in the Spring and a Christmas Tea in December for the St. James’ seniors. They enjoy a delicious meal, fellowship and entertainment. All seniors and anyone interested in assisting with this ministry are welcome.
Meals on Wings - In time of illness, hospitalization or some other stressful time of our lives, we may need assistance with meals. We also offer meals to parents of newborns or others celebrating such special occasions.
